Firewall
Firewall is a combination of Hardware or Software components that provides security system usually, to prevent unauthorized access from outside world to our internal network or Intranet.
A firewall helps to keep your computer more secure. It restricts information that comes to our computer from other computers, giving us more control over the data on our computer and providing a line of defense against people or programs (including viruses and worms) that try to connect to our computer without invitation.
We can think of a firewall as a barrier that checks information (often called traffic) coming from the Internet or an outside network and then either drops it away or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on our firewall settings. A Firewall prevents direct communication between our internal network and outside computers by routing communication through a PROXY SERVER at the edge of our network. The Proxy Server determines whether it is safe to allow the file pass through to the network or not. Firewall is also called a SECURITY EDGE.
Some popular types of Firewall are Packet-based, Proxy servers or application gateways.
Basics of Working Principle of Firewall
When someone on the Internet or a network tries to connect to your computer, we call that attempt an "unsolicited request." When our computer gets an unsolicited request, Windows Firewall blocks the connection. If we run a program such as an instant messaging program or a multiplayer network game that needs to receive information from the Internet or a network, the firewall asks if you want to block or unblock the connection. If you choose to allow the connection, Firewall creates an exception so that the firewall won't bother you when that program needs to receive information in the future.

Costs:
The cost of a firewall differs from vendor to vendor.
Sonic Wall, Check Point are some popular Firewalls.
Zone Alarm come for free of cost.
Benefits of using firewall:
Better network and computer security.
Less spam and fewer viruses.
Better use of enterprise bandwidth as we can exercise traffic control.

Firewall may be Hardware or Software used to protect our network from outside world.
